Technical Information

This page tells you some technical information about this website and its accessibility.
Web Standards
The Independent Living Schemes (York) website has been designed using technical recommendations known as “Web Standards”. Conforming to Web Standards encourages the creation of websites that are well-formed and robust.
This website was built with strict compliance to the HTML 4.01 standard published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). By designing to strict standards and ensuring the validity of the pages on this website, the informational content it holds stands the best chance of being accessible to all visitors and browsing devices as well as being compatible with future technologies.
The presentation of the website is defined in Cascading Style Sheets, separating presentation from the structure of the information on the site. This technique brings with it several benefits, which include faster download times and greater flexibility in how the content is displayed to the visitor.
More about accessibility
This site has been designed to be highly inclusive through the use of techniques based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) set out by the Web Accessibility Initiative, part of the World Wide Web Consortium.
Level of WCAG Conformance
This site has been designed to adhere to as many of the guidelines specified in the WCAG as possible. However, due to improvements in technology since the publication of WCAG 1.0, some of the guidelines have become redundant. Other guidelines are not met due to design considerations underlying this site.
In general, we have strived to meet all Level-A guidelines, most Level-AA guidelines and as many Level-AAA guidelines as we can.
Logical Tabbing Order
This site does not make use of tabindex attributes to specify a tabbing order through elements of the
pages. When used in conjunction with techniques such as “skip links”, these attributes can hinder
functionality and usability in browsers rather than enhance it. Standards-based websites such as this one are
designed with a logical structure, which means that a browser's default tabbing order should be adequate for
navigating using a computer keyboard.
